L’Arnacoeur – **1/2

Seen at the UCG Brouckere

This is a typical British/American romantic comedy, but in French! There’s actually nothing French about this movie about the actors, the language and the location. This could have come straight from Hollywood. And I’m sure next year or so they will make a remake of this with maybe Matthew McConnaughey and Sandra Bullock as the lead actors. Here it’s Romain Duris and Vanessa Paradis and they are a great team! This really is a very joyful movie. There’s nothing original about it and it’s all very predictable, but it works. It’s a must. I still don’t understand why this movie wasn’t released in Flanders. Had to see it without subtitles even. This should have been a big hit in the entire ‘country’.

The story? Oh, simple. Romain Duris plays a guy that is an expert in breaking up couples. He does it by making the girl of the couple falls in love with him, so she comes to her senses and breaks up with her fiancĂ©. In this case the parents of Vanessa Paradis’ character hire him to break off her engagement to a British guy. And of course it’s the first time it doesn’t work smooth for him. And of course it’s the first time he really falls in love with the girl. Yeah. As I said, very predictable.

But fun!
