Dave Chapelle’s Block Party – **

Posted: August 1, 2012 in 2005, Documentary, USA, XX

Dave Chapelle’s a funny guy. At times. And he likes good music. At times. So he got some of his favorite bands together for a block party in Brooklyn, inviting a lot of people from the DC neighborhood he grew up in as well. Mos Def, Erykah Badu, The Roots and the Fugees are all performing. Kanye West as well (before he became big). It’s still more a documentary than a concert movie though. But as a documentary it’s not really that informative. The coolest thing is that Chapelle hands out free tickets to New York in his home town. You get to meet the lucky ones. However, I wanted to see how these invitees experienced the block party and you don’t get to see any of that. So as a documentary it doesn’t lead to anything. It doesn’t have a point to make. And as a concert movie it’s not really delivering either because you only get to see small bits of the performances. So this movie kind of leaves me just being fascinated by Dave Chapelle, who can be really funny at times. And  who likes good music at times.
