Boy Erased – *(*)

Posted: September 29, 2019 in 2018, Australia, Drama, LGBT themed, USA, X1/2

Gay conversion programs. They are allowed in several States of the USA. They claim to be able to cure homosexuals and parents spend a lot of money sending their lgbt kids to these organizations. So be it.

Boy Erased tells the true story of one of these kids, who started the program, then quit and then wrote a book about his experience.

It’s a boring movie. Lucas Hedges just isn’t a good actor. He brings zero charisma to the protagonist. Nicole Kidman and Russell Crowe act all stereotypical and bland. The soundtrack doesn’t help either. The vocal songs are indie campfire college radio tracks. The instrumental parts seem like they were composed for a horror movie. But it’s the storytelling that just doesn’t touch the nerves, the way this topic should.

What’s up with these kids going to these programs? They have zero personality. And what about the parents? Or the guys running the program. Not one of these characters, not even the main one, is shown as a real person with real feelings or real anxieties. This is superficial bullshit.

This Is Us : Season 3 – **

Posted: September 15, 2019 in 2018, Drama, TV series, USA, XX

Kevin goes on a mission to Vietnam to learn more about what his father did over there. He’s also dating Beth’s niece. And becomes an alcoholic. Again.

Randall becomes a politician and acts like a total asshole at times.

Kate gets pregnant and gives birth.

This is one boring season.

Yes, you get to learn a bit more about the side characters. But it’s still all about the Pearson family and they become more and more annoying and less and less credible in their family antics.

It took months to finish watching this season. Only one episode was great: R & B. But then the final episode blew it again.

Not looking forward to season 4

Classic: City Lights – ***

Posted: September 4, 2019 in 1931, romcom, Silent Movie, USA, XXX

More Chaplin!

This time without annoying voice overs. A silent movie. With a typical silent movie soundtrack and typical silent movie sound effects.

It’s great!

Charlie Chaplin’s character meets a beautiful blind flower selling girl, who has no idea that he’s just a tramp. In the meantime, he saves an alcoholic millionaire from committing suicide and gets invited to the man’s fancy mansion and party lifestyle. Once sober, the rich man has no idea who this tramp is …

No extraordinary acting this time, but the pantomime play of Chaplin is charming and some of the choreography, especially in the boxing club, is excellent. There is real humor too and it’s not just slapstick. Some scenes are too long, but it doesn’t annoy.

More !

Back in 1942, Charlie Chaplin re-edited his favorite movie: The Gold Rush, a silent movie box office hit form 1925 ! He left out the script boards, added a voice over (done by himself) and had a orchestra perform a new score to it.

Having visited Chaplin’s World in Vyvey, which features lots of references to this classic, it’s time to finally watch it.

But… it’s not that special. The orchestra and the voice over make the whole experience more annoying than fun. It would have been better to watch the remastered original version from 1925.

Still, There are a few good scenes in it. Especially the ones with actress Georgia Hale, who – contrary to the men – does not overact at all and is perfect in her role as saloon dancer. Oh, there’s also the short but charming roll dance by Chaplin, two forks and two pieces of bread rolls. (see below)
