Ocean’s 8 – **

Posted: July 18, 2018 in 2018, Crime/Detective, Heist, USA, XX

It’s quite remarkable to make a heist movie with an all-female cast that is quite entertaining without ever being funny, mesmerizing, action-packed or thrilling. Maybe it’s just the speed at which the story unfolds and the clever editing. The soundtrack is good too and it all just looks like pure fun. It’s definitely not the story itself. A bunch of women decide to steal a century old necklace during the Met Gala. Mission impossible, made possible, by making it look easy. It’s also not the great acting. Apart from Anne Hathaway maybe, none of the stars really convince. No, this is a movie, which doesn’t annoy, even entertains at moments, but is so easily forgotten.

Why did I even bother ?

This is utter crap. Nothing works. The acting is terrible. The dinosaurs are boring. The story is silly. The action only happens in the last quarter or so, but by then, your attention span is long gone.

Part three seems to have a good premise though, so maybe we’ll give that one another chance. But this sequel is redundant.

Avengers: Infinity War – **

Yes, it’s entertaining. It’s action packed and there’s some humor in it. It doesn’t bore at all, even though it’s a long movie. But somehow, I’m not digging these marvel comic heroes. The X-Men franchise is much cooler. And nothing beats the Star Wars universe. But these Avengers: No. I’m not even sure if the movie would be that much more entertaining and funny if I had seen all of the other MCU movies. Probably not. I’m not in a hurry to catch up. Although I might just want to watch Dr Strange. He seems like a cool character. But none of these other heroes have any personality. It may be fun for fans to see all these superheroes have short cameos, but for others (me) this overload of cameos is confusing and unnecessary. And the visit to Wakanda is definitely not good. Chadwick Boseman looks like he’s bored to death in the 5 minutes you see his face as Black Panther. Which can be said by all of these big names, pretty much having only 5 minutes of screen time.

Josh Brolin though, the ‘bad guy’ from Deadpool 2, is the bad guy in this movie as well. What a year he’s having! He’s actually pretty good and steals the show. He’s actually the one you root for the most.

Deadpool 2 – **(*)

This is a cool franchise. The main story line is silly: superhero tries to stop a bad guy from killing a kid with superpowers. But this movie is the kind of movie you watch for the dialogue, the monologues, the references to past and present pop culture, the brutal – but ingenious – action scenes, the crazy car chases and the humor. Sometimes cynical, sometimes sarcastic, sometimes cheesy, sometimes absurd. Sometimes really bad. But always a B for trying. It’s a non stop action comedy with a great lead (Ryan Reynolds), who can keep on doing this forever. Even though he dies several times in this episode. Drop the drama and the romance next time and you’ll have an even funnier movie. And have Ricky Gervais write it. Don’t watch the trailer. Or watch it and then don’t expect anything after seeing it.

This is one confusing action hero movie.

Especially if you haven’t seen all the other movies leading up to it or have forgotten about them.

But, it works.

The United Nations want to control the Avengers a bit more because in their attempt to save the world, they do damage a lot of buildings and kill innocent victims. The Avengers are a bunch of superheroes acting like a vigilante team. (In case you’ve never heard about them before) There’s an attack on a UN council killing several people and the planned terrorist is a superhero: The Winter Soldier. Or so it seems. At the attack the king of Wakanda dies and his son, Black Panther !, wants revenge! The Avengers themselves are split between a group of heroes loyal to Iron Man (who is in support of being under UN watch) and Captain America (who trusts his best friend – the winter soldier- to be innocent.

What happens next is just non stop action. There’s a common villain (a role by Hollywood’s favorite German villain: Daniel Bruhl), but in the mean time, the Avengers fight amongst themselves. At an abandoned airport. It’s crazy. There’s all these characters that fans probably are delighted to see. But if you’re not used to the Marvel Comics Universe, it’s pretty confusing. There’s a lot of action though. So it doesn’t bore, even though the movie is long. And Black Panther isn’t really shining. As to introducing characters, the presence of silly, talkative, young Spider-Man makes you want to watch that spin-off movie with Tom Holland.

However, there is no time to watch all the other MCU movies… but maybe The Avengers: Infinite War will make more sense now.

The Foreigner – (*)

Posted: April 20, 2018 in 1/2, 2017, Action, Revenge, Terrorist

This is a mess. A real mess.

The title is deceiving. This isn’t about a ‘foreigner’, it’s about a series of attacks by a new radical IRA.

Jackie Chan, who plays an Asian restaurant owner who loses his daughter in one of the attacks, is out for revenge. He’s a well-trained soldier and determined to find and eliminate the bombers on his own.

Ok. Good premise.

But then somehow, Jackie Chan disappears in the story and Pierce Brosnan’s character becomes a central figure. He plays a politician, with links to the old IRA and is now not only dealing with a mad ‘Chinaman’ who’s haunting him, but also with his political friends, who are betraying him and with the British PM, who’s accusing him of the attacks.

Then Pierce Brosnan disappears from the screen and they focus on the bombers and their next attacks and the British who try to stop them. Oh and on a hitman who Brosnan’s character hires to kill Jackie’s character.

It’s a mess. A real mess.

And the IRA, really? Why make a movie about fictitious IRA terrorists? We finally kind of forgot they (still) exist. No need to bring paranoia back.

So, ‘retired’ director Soderbergh made his comeback with yet another heist story. Coen brothers style. It wasn’t a hit. It got rave reviews, sure, but it flopped at the box office and didn’t win awards. It starts of good, as a quirky comedy, a gentle satire. But then it becomes an action thriller without suspense. The humor dies after a while, which is sad. The unique characters just become way too serious at one point. The over the top performances aren’t really helping either. The lead actors (Adam Driver and Channing Tatum) are surprisingly good. The supporting actors (a.o. Katie Holmes and Daniel Craig) are embarrassingly bad. Somehow this movie doesn’t work. But hey, give it a shot. Maybe you just have to be in the mood for a daft story.
